Christians have heard it said that the English word ‘church’ comes from the Greek word ‘ekklesia’. This is the word Jesus used to describe what he came to build and die for. In our modern world, and for the last several centuries, we have translated ‘ekklesia’ into the our English word ‘church’, and it has become the central part of Christianity. But, would it surprise you to know that the English word ‘church’ doesn’t actually come from the Greek word ‘ekklesia’? If that’s true, what is ekklesia?
